When the owners of this 20 year old home situated in Thornton, decided it was time to create some extra room and give the home a makeover, they called P&D Kay Constructions. This well loved, brick and tile, 3 bedroom home had outgrown it’s family and it was definitely time for some changes.
To bring this outdated home back to life, the home owners relied on the advice and expertise of our team to build a modern, functional extension that integrated with the existing floor plan. When the design was decided and planning approvals were in place, construction got underway.
After the timber frame and roof trusses were installed, it offered a great perspective of the dimensions of the new space so you could appreciate how the new structure and existing building would be integrated.
To give the home a ‘new home’ feel inside and out, the owners opted to have the exterior rendered and painted to compliment the rest of the modernisation. The entire roof was also replaced with a new colorbond roof so that the extension could seamlessly tie in with the existing roofline. Additional plumbing and electrical provisions were installed for the new kitchen, living space and master bedroom.
The flow from outside to inside is highlighted with the open layout of the kitchen, dining and living area. The new kitchen is definitely the heart of this home, whilst timber floors and white walls and ceilings add to the feeling of extra space.
The new crisp white kitchen is complete with a durable stone benchtop and freestanding stainless steel cooker and there is ample storage in the main kitchen area with the oversized walk in pantry concealed behind a pair of sliding doors adjacent to the kitchen. The natural stack stone feature installed to the back of the island bench adds some warmth and texture to the space and it works well with the furnishings and tones throughout the space.
The timber floors were continued in the living areas and hallway for consistency. Internal and external entry doors were replaced to complete the update and the entire home was painted throughout to complete the transition from old to new.
A new huge covered alfresco entertaining space, complete with outdoor bar, was constructed to meet the clients entertaining needs.
The option of installing modern bifold stacker doors allows a seamless flow from indoors and outdoors, allowing the home owners plenty of space to entertain friends and family. The fly-over style roof line on the outdoor living space is positioned high enough to ensure that natural light still floods into the home.
A brand new contemporary styled bathroom ensuite completes the master suite and smart choice of white wall tiles, charcoal vanity and grey floor tiles means this bathroom won’t date in a hurry.
The clever decision to install ducted air conditioning throughout the home during the construction phase, means year-round comfort for the home owners immediately and more importantly it alleviates the hassle of trying to run pipe and ductwork at a later date which has the potential to disturb new gyprock and paintwork.
This home is a great example of what you can do to a 20+ year old home that just doesn’t have enough space, or is just looking a bit tired and outdated.
With its new spacious extension to the rear, fantastic new outdoor living space, new kitchen, new laundry, new bathrooms, new flooring and an all over makeover, this home is now as good as new!
The owners of the home were very happy with the results and as always, we are very proud of the entire P&D Kay Constructions team and the finished project.
